If you are trying to lose weight, the amount of sleep you get may be just as important as your diet and exercise. Unfortunately, people are not getting enough sleep. In fact, research says about 30% of the adults sleep fewer than six hours most nights. Funnily, the evidence states that sleep may be the missing factor for many who are struggling to lose weight. Here are a few reasons why sleeping can help you lose weight:

1. Sleep can help you feel fuller, longer: Getting a good night’s rest not only helps you to fight the urge to overeat but keeps the hunger pangs in check. According to research by mattress suppliers in India, when people didn’t get enough sleep, their hormone levels became unbalanced. Sleep helps in keeping the hunger hormones in line, making sure we feel hungry only when we should.

2. You’re more likely to exercise: Losing weight takes a lot of energy and if you are sleeping too much it’s going to impact your energy level and sleeping too little can have effects on your ability to focus and concentrate on all the tasks at hand. Some believe that one of the main reasons getting enough sleep is linked to successful weight loss is that provides you with the drive you need to stick to your goals. Other research, according to mattress suppliers research says that people who are sleepy often say they exercise less, opting for sedentary activities.

3. Sleep leads to better calorie burn: While you sleep, you are likely to burn somewhere between 50 and 100 calories in an hour. The experts are now learning that getting the right amount of sleep encourages a healthy metabolism and less time on sleep throws it out of whack. Other research has shown that sleeping in cooler temperatures can stimulate a type of fat called brown fat which burns more calories and has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. However, no experts suggest that sleeping without any physical or behavioral modifications will help you lose weight.

4. It helps prevent insulin resistance: Poor cells cause the cells to become insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone which moves sugar from the bloodstream into the body’s cells to be used as energy. The excessive insulin makes you hungrier and tells the body to store more calories as fat. In a study, few men were allowed to sleep only four hours for six nights. This resulted in their bodies ability to lower the blood sugar levels. This means that only a few nights of poor sleep can cause cells to become insulin resistant.

5. Poor sleep decreases your resting metabolism: The resting metabolic rate is the number of calories the body burns when you’re completely at rest. Research states that sleep deprivation may lower your RMR. It also seems that poor sleep can cause muscle loss. Muscles burn more calories at rest than fat does so when the muscle is lost, resting metabolic rates decrease.

Along with eating right and exercising, getting quality sleep on a quality mattress is an important part of weight maintenance. Poor sleep alters the way the body responds to food. But as Springwel and other leading mattress supplier say, establishing healthy sleep habits can help the body maintain a healthy weight.
